After the Storm
In the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, one woman tells of how climate change connected disasters fuel gender-based violence.
In November 2013, Typhoon Yolanda devastated the central Philippines, killing over 6,000 people and displacing millions. As one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded, Yolanda destroyed homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, particularly affecting poor coastal communities in Samar and Leyte. The collapse of law enforcement, overcrowded and unsafe evacuation centres, and delayed government response created conditions where gender-based violence surged. This short film centres on Luchie, a survivor-turned-advocate, who experienced firsthand how climate change can exacerbate cases of gender-based violence and what she and her community are doing to fight back against it.
